My Guard
I'm lost in my emotions,
So terribly confused,
I can't understand,
I simply cannot choose.
It's been over a year,
Since I've put my heart on the line,
It was my first love,
So I needed that time.
Now here I am,
I've found a wonderful girl,
She treats me right and is so nice,
And to her I am the world.
I don't know what is wrong,
I can't seem to let her in,
I won't let her get close,
Like I'm a man made of tin.
It's not that I don't like her,
It's more like I'm afraid,
I don't want to be hurt again,
Now that my first debt is finally paid.
Sometimes I will slip,
And let my guard down,
I let my walls crumble,
Right into the ground.
For those few minutes,
She can see it in my eyes,
She'll simply ask "What is it, Josh?",
And then I realize.
I put my defenses back up,
Reply with a short "Nothing",
Even though I want to tell her,
She makes my heart sing.
But once I tell her,
There's no turning back,
Then it's all downhill,
She'll notice what I lack.
I already see things,
But then she will too,
She'll leave me like the others,
And my heart will have more dues.
Maybe this is the one,
She won't care about my flaws,
She'll accept them with the rest of me,
And love me just because.
I know what I must do,
Even though it will be hard,
I have to give her a chance and let her in,
I have to let down my guard.
